Founded in 1912, Melba is a small agricultural community in Canyon County, located in southwest Idaho's Snake River Valley and counted as part of the Boise metropolitan area. Fields of potatoes, beans, sugar beets, onions, corn and grain surround the town. Local seed crops earned it the name Seed Heart of America, with seed grown for onions, carrots, peas, beans and sweet corn, plus alfalfa and clover.

Daily needs are handled close to home, with a grocery store, restaurants, medical and dental clinics and a local fire district. Head a short way out of town and you reach Snake River canyon country, where you can watch raptors, see prehistoric rock art at Celebration Park and visit volcanic features such as the Crater Rings.

Living in Melba

Housing in and around Melba spans a wide range, from older homes along rural roads, a few of them built around the mid-20th century, to newer builds in subdivisions such as River Rim Ranch. Land is a major draw, and the roads crossing the surrounding farmland hold parcels from a few acres to far bigger tracts.

Growth across the Treasure Valley has reached Melba too, and the town once put new construction on hold for three months while it adopted a building code and subdivision ordinance. Because lot sizes, home ages and regulations differ widely between lots in town and rural parcels, each property deserves a careful look.
